The meaning of The Teatro dell’Aquila for the city of Fermo

Theatre, historically, was the meeting point for all population, including aristocracy and rising classes.  The Teatro dell’Aquila had different roles for the city of Fermo: to perform shows, to meet to celebrate, to eat or to play cards. It was also used as a dance hall, as a cinema and as seat for cultural and recreative meetings.

History of the Teatro dell’Aquila: when it was born and when it was renovated

The theatre was inaugurated on 26 September 1790, with a first representation that should be a test for painting and lighting.

The project was shaped in 1774, when the Council of Cernita decided the final seat for the Teatro dell’Aquila of Fermo. Its construction run into difficulties due to unexpected economic events, to problems for building and to public administration. But the project by Cosimo Morelli eventually saw the light. It officially opened on August 1971. In this occasion the tragedy " The destruction of Jerusalem" by Giuseppe Giordani was played.

In 1826 a great fire inside the theatre caused great damage. Restoration works made changes in the original project. It gave the actual look that you can see nowadays: an oval room and a one-mouth scene.

Teatro dell'Aquila: actual structure

Nowadays the Teatro dell’Aquila of Fermo has a capacity of 1.000 seats and 124 boxes divided in five floors around the stalls. The stage area is 350 square meters and its position is a bit inclined towards the floor. For this reason the stage view is perfect. The hall has very good acoustics and it is another important and positive element.

When you enter the theatre you can breathe an ancient atmosphere which recalls its historical past. It is elegant and well-kept, charming and cosy. It is provided with comfortable armchairs, the perfect point of view to admire the wonderful details of this structure. The feeling will surprise you, after having seen that front and entrance of the building are not sumptuous.

Paintings and lighting system

Another good quality of the Teatro dell’Aquila of Fermo is its lighting system. It was restored and renewed after the fire and it was enriched by a chandelier that was bought in Paris: it is made of 56 golden iron branches with woody leaves and crystal.

The hall is very bright and you will be able to appreciate architectural details, decorations and all the materials which were used to make the furniture, first of all velvet. The painting on the roof is very particular: it represents the six night hours while they are dancing, the three Grazie and the Olympian gods while they are listening to Apollo's singing.

The painting on the curtain is very beautiful too.
