Chapter 1: A Wonderful Day in Ponzano di Fermo - Here is My Itinerary

A Wonderful Day in Ponzano di Fermo - Here is My Itinerary

Nestled like a precious gem atop a hill, as if to better guard its treasures, Ponzano di Fermo is a picturesque village that slowly reveals the secrets of its glorious past.

Since the beginning of my journey through the villages of Le Marche, I had been hearing whispers about this place, eager to learn more about it. I was told about the magnificence of the artistic masterpieces housed in the historic centre, and my curiosity grew.

Today, after a drive along the SP56, I finally took the detour to Ponzano di Fermo, arriving soon at its gates. Like a romantic traveler from the 19th century, driven by an irresistible thirst for adventure and discovery, I felt as though I had stepped into an extraordinary painting crafted by the great artists of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The peace, harmony, and beauty of this bucolic place, standing proudly amidst green hills, captivated me. I couldn’t wait to enter the village.

Chapter 2: The Magical and Evocative Atmosphere of Ponzano di Fermo’s Historic Centre

The Magical and Evocative Atmosphere of Ponzano di Fermo’s Historic Centre

As I walked toward the town centre, I wondered what artistic masterpieces and delightful encounters awaited me in this silent, charming place. My gaze was immediately drawn to a tall tower rising above the surrounding buildings. "That must be the Castle of Ponzano di Fermo," I thought, and soon made my way towards it.

Built in the 11th century, the castle’s existence is recorded in a document from 1059. In 1214, Marquis Aldovrandino, son of Azzo d'Este, officially recognised it as a castle, along with San Martino in Plumbarano, Montone, Longiano, and Saint Cipriano. During the 15th century, the troops of Carlo Malatesta and Francesco Sforza occupied it. Walking through the elegant loggia, adorned with arches and pointed vaults, I felt as though I was stepping into an ancient world.

Arriving at the castle, I was awestruck by the clock tower and the entrance gate, crowned by a fortified tower rebuilt in the late 15th century, embellished with elegant swallow-tailed battlements. After exploring the imposing manor, I continued my walk through the village’s winding streets.

Chapter 3: A Throwback to Ancient Ponzano di Fermo

A local had told me about a fascinating historical re-enactment held every July to celebrate the village’s independence from Fermo and its transition to a free municipality. The entire village transforms into a vibrant festival, its streets teeming with life. I made a mental note to return for the celebration someday. Meanwhile, hunger gnawed at me, so I stopped at a local café for a quick snack before continuing my stroll.

As I wandered through the narrow alleys of the historic centre, I could almost hear the diligence, voices, and clanging sounds coming from the old workshops. Artisans worked with passion and dedication, creating beautiful pieces with the same craftsmanship passed down through generations. The memory of the bustling, vibrant streets of the past became more vivid with each step.

My walk led me to some of the most important landmarks in the village, from the splendid Romanesque church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, also known as the Church of San Marco, dating back to 1100, to the church of Santa Maria from 1792, and the Palazzo della Comunità. Each of these places housed hidden wonders, such as ancient archaeological finds from the 3rd century AD or intricate architectural details.

Other treasures of the village include the tower, the 15th-century bell tower, the Moscogna Spring, Saint Mark Park, and the Church of Saint Simon with its precious wooden altar. The village’s deep history continued to unfold at every turn, revealing centuries of tradition.

Chapter 4: Towards Torchiaro

"You should also visit Torchiaro and Capparuccia," suggested Nino, the barista who had served me my second coffee of the day. He spoke with the wisdom of a local who knew the land’s secrets well.

Intrigued, I followed his advice and set off for Torchiaro. The road winded through lush vegetation, past ancient paths that led to nearby locations. Upon arrival, I found myself in a fairy-tale village inhabited by just over a hundred people.

Crossing the bridge over the Rio ditch, I climbed the steep path toward the village’s core, passing through its mighty walls, which exuded an ancient aura.

The oldest part of the settlement greeted me with a 14th-century pointed arch gate. In the quaint little square, I admired points of interest such as the Church of Saints Simon and Jude, renovated in 1827, home to a 13th-century baptismal font and Roman finds from the Imperial Age.

Torchiaro, though small, revealed immense beauty. Its marble columns, medieval gates, ancient washhouse, and towering castle walls told stories of a village rich in history, tradition, and serenity. As I stood there, a soft breeze brushed my face. I was happy.

Chapter 5: Let’s Go to Capparuccia

Following Nino’s advice, I continued my journey to Capparuccia along the Provincial Road Val d'Ete Vivo/SP112.

When I arrived, I visited the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, but the real highlight was the Museum of Popular Culture, a true gem. This museum won my heart, filling me with nostalgia as I walked through its extensive collection of vintage photographs, original furniture, tools from the region’s rural past, and precise reconstructions of classrooms from the early 20th century.

It was a thrilling and authentic journey through time, giving me a glimpse into the everyday life of Le Marche’s artisans and farmers. The museum offered a rare and moving opportunity to connect with the past, where every object told a story of tradition, hard work, and community.

Chapter 6: Visit to the Mysterious Madonna delle Cataste

I left Capparuccia and got back on the road, wandering around the outskirts of Ponzano di Fermo. I stopped when my attention was caught by a rather peculiar structure. It was the Madonna delle Cataste—something the locals had already mentioned to me, nestled in the lush Ete Valley in the Schito district. I had been told that this place held deep spiritual significance, but nothing could have prepared me for the atmosphere that awaited.

The ruins of the ancient temple were shrouded in an eerie beauty, overgrown with moss and vines. These stones, long abandoned, still held the whispers of miraculous Marian apparitions, drawing pilgrims for centuries. The locals spoke of sightings of a woman in white, said to be the Madonna herself, appearing in the ruins to offer hope and blessings.

As I explored, I felt the weight of centuries of devotion. In a nearby meadow, groups of people were exercising, relaxing, or taking a break from an e-bike ride. It was a fascinating juxtaposition: this ancient, sacred site now also served as a peaceful retreat for modern visitors.

I sat on a stone for a while, letting the tranquil air wash over me. The Madonna delle Cataste had offered me a spiritual experience unlike any other—a journey not just through history, but into the soul.
