The Dolomites: a skier's paradise

Val Gardena, Alto Adige, Italy

The Dolomites are a unique landscape in Europe and among the most beautiful in the world. A true paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. The list of places you can consider for a skiing holiday is long. Besides the big, well-known names such as, for example, Val Gardena and Alta Badia, there are also some real gems. San Martino di Castrozza with the iconic Pale, Alpe Lusia and Passo San Pellegrino. In the latter two locations, you can ski on magnificent slopes such as the challenging ‘La VolatA’ or panoramic ones such as Alpe Lusia with views of the Lagorai.

Again, if you decide to visit these mountains, you can consider staying in the Civetta area (Alleghe, Selva di Cadore, Palafavera, Zoldo), where you can admire the so-called stone giants such as La Civetta and Monte Pelmo.

There is nothing like watching the sun set behind these majestic peaks after a day spent on the slopes. At sunset, then, the Dolomites turn pink: a phenomenon known as Enrosadira, which adds to their charm.

Dolomiti Superski: skiing without ever taking off your skis

Alto Adige, Italy

Once you have identified the destination in the Dolomites that inspires you the most, here is the solution for unforgettable days of skiing: the Dolomiti Superski.

The Dolomiti Superski was founded in 1974 and covers an area of about 3,000 km2 between the provinces of Bolzano, Trento and Belluno, including most of the winter ski slopes of the Dolomites, for a total of 1,200 km of slopes divided into 12 different ski areas. The 450 lift facilities, covering the regions of Trentino Alto-Adige and Veneto, are accessible with a single ski pass, the Dolomiti Superski. Here, where the peaks of the Dolomites rise towards the sky with their imposing and characteristic shapes, you can enjoy a unique experience on some of the most spectacular slopes in the world.

The ski resort covers a vast area, connecting no less than 12 ski areas. With 1,200 kilometres of slopes, the Dolomiti Superski is an endless network of snow-covered trails that will take you through picture-postcard panoramas. Every valley, every peak, every descent offers different scenery, but all share a breathtaking beauty.

Imagine being able to ski without borders, moving from one valley to another without ever taking off your skis. Thanks to a modern and efficient lift system, you can cross entire mountain ranges, such as the famous Sellaronda.  You can ski from Val Gardena (Ortisei, Selva and Santa Cristina), through Val di Fassa (Canazei and Campitello) and back.

If you want to fully experience the Sellaronda, you will need the whole ski day and remember that the lifts open in the morning at 8.30am and close between 4.15pm and 4.45pm (depending on the time of year).

Two famous ski tours

Dolomites, Italy

There are many experiences you can have with Dolomiti Superski. Let's take a look at two ski tours that may be within your reach. Remember that each slope is marked with a colour that defines its difficulty: from light blue, which represents an easy slope even for beginners, to red and black. The black slope is for very expert skiers and sometimes they are also slopes that are part of the Ski World Cup such as the Gran Risa in Alta Badia or the Erta in Plan de Corones. Always be careful and consider your skiing skills before tackling a slope.

The most famous tour of all is the Sellaronda. The route winds around the four Dolomite passes that embrace the Sella Group. Travelling along it, one crosses the Ladin valleys of Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Fassa. The route covers a total of 40 kilometres, 27 of which can be enjoyed entirely on skis. It can be easily covered in a single day (consider about six hours), in both directions. Clockwise the signs are orange, anticlockwise green.

Then there is the Tour of the Great War, also called the Tour of Peace, which stretches for about 80 kilometres around Col di Lana, the mountain symbol of the First World War, passing by Civetta, Monte Pelmo, Tofane, Lagazuoi, Conturines, Settsass, Sassongher, Sella and Marmolada. This tour is challenging and suitable for experienced skiers.
