Vladier temple

Finally, not only the caves but all the territory of Frasassi is a hidden treasure of history, art, culture and spirituality, with many activities to carry out and attractions to discover. The most important attractions are the Madonna di Frasassi Sanctuary, better known as the Temple of Valadier, and the Hermitage of Santa Maria Infra Saxa, about 1 km from the Frasassi Caves.

The Madonna di Frasassi Sanctuary stands at about 300 meters high, in the center of the Grotto of the Blessed Virgin. Realized in neoclassical style, it was commissioned in 1819 by Cardinal Annibale della Genga, the future Pope Leo XII and inaugurated in 1828. It is also called the Temple of Valadier since, for its stylistic forms, it is traditionally attributed to the architect Giuseppe Valadier. Next to the Temple, there is the hermitage-oratory of Santa Maria Infra Saxa, built starting from the Early Middle Ages and linked to the phenomenon of female monasticism.
