Capri's magic
Nature, history, glamour. From Roman emperors to Hollywood stars, Capri has always been an island capable of conquering even the most demanding visitors. Capri, however, is for everyone, and fascinates its visitors both in summer and winter for its incredible natural beauty and also for its important historical finds.
Its main square, the piazzetta, is famous throughout the world, as is its skyline, with the famous Faraglioni. And what about the amazing Villa Jovis, commissioned by Emperor Tiberius, or the incredible colors of the Blue Grotto? Without forgetting the aromas and flavors of Mediterranean cuisine. In short, the reasons to fall in love with this island are truly countless. It's just time to go!
Capri: an island in the heart of the Mediterranean sea
In a particularly lucky position, kissed by the Mediterranean sun, Capri is located between the Gulf of Naples and that of Salerno, between the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi Coast. Right from the junction point between the latter, Punta della Campanella, you can almost reach Capri with your hand because only a stretch of sea of a few kilometers separates it from the coast.
This probably contributed to ensuring that the island was inhabited since prehistoric times and in fact the ancient Romans, who lived here after the Greek colonists and built twelve imperial villas, already found the first archaeological finds. Since then, the island has been inhabited continuously and its history has always been linked to that of the Kingdom of Naples.
How to go to Capri from Naples
If you have chosen to go to Capri for your vacation, you must know that there are many ways to go to the island from Naples.
The most comfortable ever? Get to Naples by train, at Piazza Garibaldi station you will find the InStazione desk which organizes transfers, but also excursions, overnight stays and everything you may need, so you won't have to worry about anything, except enjoying Capri.
Alternatively there is public transport. The hydrofoils depart from Molo Beverello, right in front of the Maschio Angioino, while fast ships and ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa, just one kilometer away.
The cost per route is €20 for hydrofoils and €15 for ferries.
The duration of the journey varies from a minimum of 50 minutes to a maximum of an hour and a half.
In summer the first ride from Naples is at 4 in the morning, the last at 9.35pm, but times vary depending on the seasons, so it's always a good idea to check.
You can purchase your ticket at the ticket office at the boarding pier, but remember that in high season and on weekends you risk long queues. The advice is to arrive well in advance or buy online. Also remember that there is a small surcharge for checking in luggage and that disembarking on Capri by car or motorbike is only permitted for residents.
How to get to Capri from the airport
If you arrive in Naples by plane you can easily reach both Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa with the Alibus. The bus, which leaves from Terminal 1 of Capodichino airport, takes about 40 minutes.
The cost of the ticket is €5, you can buy it on board, at the automatic ticket machines, or online.
The service is active every day from 5.30am to 12am.
Alternatively, of course, you can take a taxi for around €20.
How to get to Capri from Sorrento
Reaching Capri from Sorrento is very easy, especially in summer. From the port of Sorrento, Marina Piccola, hydrofoils and ferries depart every half hour, between 7.15am and 7.25pm. The cost varies from €18 to €26. It is definitely a good idea to also buy the return ticket in the morning, unless you want to stay overnight in Capri. In fact, the afternoon trips from Capri to Sorrento are always very crowded and there is a risk of being sold out.
Another tip to save time is to also buy the ticket for the Capri funicular in Marina Piccola, which connects the island's port with the centre.
The port of Sorrento is connected to Piazza Tasso by a shuttle or a lift located inside the Villa Comunale. The walk is still very pleasant, but also remember that on the way back you will have to face a steep climb which can be a bit tiring.
The sea journey lasts between twenty minutes and half an hour and offers spectacular views along a good stretch of the Sorrento Coast. Remember to choose seats on the left side of the hydrofoil so you can comfortably admire the view from the sea.
How to get to Capri from Salerno
The duration of the journey from Salerno to Capri varies from one and a half to two hours depending on the means of transport chosen.
The port of Salerno is easily accessible, it is a couple of kilometers from the train station where high-speed trains also arrive.
However, ferries and hydrofoils from Salerno to Capri are not very frequent. There are a total of twenty weekly trips and are concentrated in the morning hours, starting from 7.50am. For this reason it is certainly preferable to purchase tickets in advance online. The cost is €33.
You can bring hand luggage and a bicycle with you, but motor vehicles are also not permitted on board. For bulkier luggage there is a small surcharge.
How to go to Capri from Amalfi Coast
If your holiday or trip has taken you to the wonderful setting of the Amalfi Coast, you can't help but visit Capri too.
After having admired the splendor of the panoramic gardens of Ravello, or having learned about the art of the master ceramists of Vietri, you can easily organize a trip to Capri starting from Amalfi.
