Where to ski in Lombardy: the best ski areas of the Region

Lombardy offers some really fascinating ski resorts. Some are even internationally famous, while others are less well known. This of course can be an advantage: they are less frequented slopes and, above all, they are cheaper resorts in which to ski.

The offer, in any case, is of high quality, accompanied by interesting facilities, such as huts, chalets, high quality restaurants and hotels with views of the most beautiful snow-capped peaks in the region.

Finally, in the mountains of Lombardy, after an intense skiing session, you can refresh your body with some of the tastiest traditional regional dishes. After all, the famous Valtellina is located right here (and we are mentioning only one of the many locations scattered throughout this sprawling region!).

Before we let ourselves be seduced by the delights of gastronomy, however, here are the most interesting ski resorts of Lombardy.

Ponte di Legno-Tonale is undoubtedly one of the most famous ski resorts in Lombardy.

It is located in the Brescia area just a stone's throw from the border with Trentino, at about 1,200 meters (3940 ft) above sea level, and offers great ski slopes. The Presena glacier dominates this resort from its 3,000-meter (9850 ft) altitude.

There are many lifts (about 30 counting chairlifts, gondolas, but also carpets and ski lifts) and there are 8 slopes for a total of 100 km (62 mi). The difference in altitude is significant: about 1900 meters (6230 ft) between the slopes in the valley and those at altitude.

Here it is also possible to practice many sports activities even for those who are not ski experts: quad biking, dog sledding, snowmobiling, but also cross-country skiing. And, of course, just off the slopes, a riot of pubs, bars, restaurants and discos.

This is certainly not the cheapest destination in Lombardy in which to ski, but certainly one of the most popular. 115 kilometers (72 mi) of ski slopes that run in one of the most spectacular natural settings in the region. In fact, we are located between the Stelvio National Park and the Swiss National Park, in the province of Sondrio.

The particularity of skiing in Livigno is that it has two slopes, that of Carosello 3000 and that of Mottolino: in this way, skiers have entire sunny days to launch themselves on the slopes.

The ski slopes are perfectly snow-covered for most of the season and are divided between blue, red and black runs for a total of no less than 78 slopes.

Coming to ski in this Lombardy resort, however, also means having access to no less than 3 snowparks, among the most popular ones in Europe! Here you can try your hand at all kinds of snow activities: go-karting on ice, snow biking, riding on snow, and especially snowboarding and boardercross.

For this reason, and for the variety of activities after skiing, Livigno is one of the most popular ski destinations in Lombardy, even for families!

We remain in the province of Sondrio to discover one of the most popular destinations for skiers looking for adrenaline.

The slopes of Madesimo, included in the Valchiavenna Ski Area, stretch for about 50 km (31 mi), of which as many as 40 are dedicated to downhill skiing, while about ten are for cross-country skiing.

There are 13 of the most modern ski lifts to be found in Lombardy.

Among the best-loved ski slopes certainly is Canalone, an off-piste particularly well known for its beauty and difficulty (about 1,000 meters of elevation gain and 3 km of descent).

This ski area in Lombardy also offers, some days of the week, the possibility of night skiing, for an even more exciting experience.

There is also no shortage of snowshoeing (even at night), snowmobiling or snowboarding inside Madesimo's snowpark.

Alta Valtellina and Bormio are among the favorite ski resorts in Lombardy. In fact, this area has always been synonymous with the ski week in Lombardy.

Reachable very quickly from the main cities of the region, it offers the stupendous views of the Stelvio Pass. Precisely because of these characteristics, it has been the perfect location for numerous editions of the Ski World Cup.

This area offers 20 ski slopes, for a total of about 50 km (31 mi) of tracks, located between 1200 and 3000 meters (3950 to 9840 ft) above sea level (Cima Bianca, specifically). The facilities have recently been renovated to offer the best of current technological solutions.

As for the ski offer, there are numerous slopes for expert skiers, as well as for skiers looking for medium-difficulty tracks and sportsmen eager to learn.

Last but not least, let's not forget the opportunity to sample the superb cuisine of Valtellina and the chance to regenerate after a day on the slopes in Bormio's many spas and thermal centers.

Lombardy truly offers a wide range of ski resorts suitable for the most diverse needs.
