History of the trulli of Alberobello

Around the 8th century, due to the imposition of taxes on new buildings by the Vice King of the Kingdom of Naples, the inhabitants of these lands began to build dwellings that were not fixed, i.e. temporary structures that could be dismantled if there was an inspection. Therefore, by only removing the keystone, the conical rural buildings immediately collapsed becoming a heap of stones.
Characteristics of the trulli
As soon as the inhabitants of those lands were free of feudal shackles, the trulli became permanent dwells. Indeed, during the centuries, they have been improved by placing more cones one next to the other in order to create wider houses, by constructing roman arches in the inside, windows, fireplaces, tanks or water and external plaster for more stability.
The trulli of Alberobello nowadays
Nowadays in those buildings it is possible to find restaurants, shops and even accomodation facilities that have met modern needs without undermining the historical identity of the pyramidal constructions.
Considered to be the Capital of the Trulli, Alberobello is divided in two main districts: Rione Monti and Aia Piccola, and in both areas is it possible to live an unique experience walking by these rather particular white pyramidal structures. In a scenario of hills, olive trees, vineyards and cone- roofed houses, there is an elegant location where is it possible to spend your holidays.
