The history of the Venetian islands
Murano, Burano and Torcello are three jewels of the Venice lagoon, each with a unique history. Murano is world famous for glass blowing, an art that dates back to 1291, when the furnaces were moved to the island to prevent fires in Venice. Over the centuries, master glassmakers have created extraordinary works, making the island a center of artistic excellence. Burano, known for its brightly colored houses, is also notable for its ancient lacemaking tradition, dating back to the 16th century. The skilled lace makers of the island have produced precious artefacts, in demand throughout Europe. Torcello, however, has even deeper historical roots: it was one of the first settlements in the lagoon, thriving during the Byzantine period. Once rich and populous, today it is almost uninhabited, but houses historical treasures such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta (7th century) and its splendid mosaics. Each island tells a piece of Venetian history.
