Viterbo underground: what it is and what to see with a tour of the ancient underground labyrinth

Under the city of the Popes, Viterbo, it lies a web of labyrinths deep between 3 and 10 meters. Even though the making of these labyrinths is still unclear - with several scholars talking about a possible Etruscan origin - the underground of Viterbo was used from the Middle Age until the XX century. In the past, the labyrinths were used as a water collector as well as a secret paths since the netting starts just under Piazza della Morte and it arrives at the Medieval walls. During the Second War World, these amazing tunnels became shelters for civilians.

Nowadays, the labyrinths of Viterbo, dug in the tuff (the typical stone of the Tuscia region) are open to the public, they are also well illuminated with LED lights and they are full of secrets and stories ready to be discovered.
