The history of the Madonna delle Cataste, between apparitions and legends
The area surrounding Madonna delle Cataste has long attracted nature lovers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and even those intrigued by the paranormal. Are you wondering the origin of its name? This toponym refers to an area within the territory of the pretty village of Ponzano di Fermo along the banks of the Ete Vivo River. According to local tales, some women from the hamlet witnessed prodigious apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1921. She would have appeared on a wood pile on a farm owned by the confraternity of the Holy Sacrament.
News of this miraculous event spread quickly, drawing believers from nearby communities who gathered in processions. Inspired by the accurate descriptions given by some of the sorcerers, they decided to build a Marian shrine in the same year. However, the construction was halted due to the intervention of the Ecclesiastical Authorities. Arriving from Provincial Road 112 in the direction of Grottazzolina or from Road 180, which comes from Ponzano di Fermo, you can see the ruins of an evocative temple consisting of eight arches. Architecturally, it has an octagonal shape, embellished by portals surrounded by columns and tapered masonry structures, decorated with ogival arches.
